Have you ever wondered what sound actually looks like? You may be thinking, how can you see sound? According to Wikipedia, “sound is a vibration that propagates as a mechanical wave of pressure and displacement, through some medium (such as air or water).” That being said, how can you ever SEE sound?
NPR investigated the properties of sound using a way to visualize sound waves. The photography technique is known as the Schlieren Flow Visualization and it will actually allow you to see as sound waves travel throughout the air.
Watch as the video shows several examples of sound being produced, whether it's by clapping your hands, dropping objects or by using a firecracker.
