Turntable masters DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist have just announced a fall tour, “Renegades of Rhythm,” focused around an ambitious project: presenting proto-hip-hop artist Afrika Bambaataa's legacy through music – not by just spinning what he created but by touring with vinyl handpicked from his collection.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with Bambaataa's work, his ability as a artist, producer and taste-maker was instrumental in setting hip-hop on the path its on today. His record collection (40,000 strong!) is housed at Cornell University, where he is a visiting scholar.
Sure, it seems strange that Cut Chemist and DJ Shadow will be touring with Bambaataa's records and not the man himself. Upon hearing the News of this tour, I worriedly Googled Bambaataa's name to make sure he hadn't died, that this tour wasn't a remembrance of his work. Still, its a chance to see incredible DJs perform with some classic material.
