Infected Mushroom has released their third volume of “Friends on Mushrooms”. This collection has historically featured a mixture of collaborations but this time the duo included 3 original, solo tracks, and one song made with producer Savant. Each song on the EP touches on the styles used by Infected Mushroom over the last 10 years.
“Rise Up” (with Savant): Features a melodic piano and up tempo rhythm. The vocal is massively distorted and very mushroom-like. Their choice of sounds for the track reminds me of the soundtrack from Space Invaders. Not to say that the song isn't stunning, incorporating emotional vocal layers, deep bass, and a throwback sound. A great song for any mood, this reminds me of something I would have heard 10 years ago on “IM The Supervisor”.
“Kipod”: A much trippier track than “Rise Up”. Kipod has a big-room psy trance feel. Fans of “The Messenger 2012” will enjoy this. It moves quickly through beautifully designed transitions that encompass the diversity of Infected Mushroom. This tune makes me think of the range found on “Army of Mushrooms”.
“Bark”: This songs introduces the ‘heavy' that Infected Mushroom has incorporated into their more recent production. The guitar rif reminds me of their work on “Legend of a Black Shawarma”. This is definitely a headbanging track that will likely be added to their live sets. (I can just imagine Duvdev spinning around in circles on stage,)
“Who is There”: This is a really fun track that starts off with a bouncy melody. It transitions into a dirty, heavy, bass-generated anthem that definitely delivers that ‘Friends on Mushrooms' feel.
Basically, this EP rocks. It's only 4 songs but does so many different things and will appeal to so many different tastes. As much as fans are looking forward to the release of “Converting Vegetarians 2” this Winter, this is a can't-miss summer stunner.
