Ryan DeRobertis AKA Saint Pepsi is proving to be an electro-funk/vaporwave/good vibes wunderkind. After releasing countless tracks and an album with online outfits, he's been picked up by Carpark Records, which brings us to “Fiona Coyne,” his debut release on his new home label.
Named after a tween character from a show I've never seen (Degrassi, I know Drake was on it but I'd wager this song is better than the show, anyway), “Fiona Coyne” is a perfectly bright track. Sonically, this track lands somewhere between a disco/funk-throwback (later, we can thank Daft Punk for warming up those waters), J-Pop and whatever the musical equivalent to eating ice cream in the summer is. A tight rhythm guitar, wonderfully brassy horns and popping synths back up catchy vocals supplied by DeRobertis. Its a surprise to hear him sing over one of his own tracks, but not really surprising that it works incredibly well.
This new song seems to be a slight turn from the fast-paced, sample heavy sound of Gin City, but its bursting with as much energy as ever. Keep an eye out for everything Pepsi touches.
Is Fiona your favorite character? Should Saint Pepsi have written a song about young Drake instead? Do you think Saint Pepsi is going to release an album about Degrassi? Let us know.
