Despite his unbelievable talent and unique style, it is pretty impressive how Bassnectar has somewhat stayed out of the limelight and mainstream. To my fellow music fans who have seen him, we all can attest to how amazing his shows are. Encompassing the physical aspect of insane bass hitting you in the chest, emotional attractiveness in his purposefully weird mix of sounds, and then for some, the spiritual journey taken with fellow fans and Lorin himself for the temporary period of time.
In this interview by Katie Bain, Mr. Ashton shares a lot about his life. This includes how he became so interested in bass while searching for the path less traveled, his views on making music the most important aspect of this culture and the way that it can touch everyone differently, along with personal views on drugs and dancing among other things. We get the chance to get a small piece of who Bassnectar really is. He even says he is without a doubt a ‘total nerd' and pokes a little fun at the big concerts/festivals popularity.
“it’s so silly to me to have 30,000 people facing and worshipping this one dorky human who’s lucky enough to be playing music for everyone else.”
Also – “I love seeing and knowing that this 16-year-old kid with a Bassnectar tattoo loves this music that I’m making, and that it means so much to him or her. That’s what inspires me to make it—not so much the ego or fame or what I’m going to tweet about. How can I best channel something that’s so emotionally precious and tender and special to me? When you tune into that emotional frequency, does it say the same thing? If it does, it’s like lovemaking on a musical level, even if it’s an ugly sound.”
