You know it’s a great piece of music when it transcends its typical genre devotees. Norwegian producer Todd Terje (pronounced Ter-ye) is renown as one of the kings of nu disco and received unanimous praise for his track Inspector Norse, which was named the #1 song of 2012 by mixmag. It’s Album Time, Terje’s studio debut, is an incredible listen, which could be described as before or possibly ahead of its time.
It’s Album Time throws the listener into a retro vacation through tropical and ritzy backdrops. Terje’s mix of housey beats with classical, organic sounding ranging from jazzy, samba, and 8-bit leads make this record stand out from todays borderline obnoxious EDM music. Tunes like Strandbar and Swing Star (parts 1 &2) make for the ideal convertible 80s cruising soundtrack while just enough electronica to make it danceable at a club too. Concluding the album in a most memorable fashion, Terje puts Inspector Norse at the very end, which is a destined indie dance classic with one of the most infectious hooks and most epic yet subtle builds in recent years.
Avid EDM haters would still appreciate the mixmash of musical ingredients and throwback vibe of It’s Album Time. Easily one of the most fun, unique albums of the year and a must listen.
