Imagine walking into a club and being given a piece of paper that says “No Dancing Please.” The dance ban in Japanese night clubs began at the end of 2010 and many clubs were forced to shut down due to police raids.
In preparation for the 2020 Olympics, Japan began to overturn some of their existing laws to better fit the influx of foreigners. One of which being the “no dancing” ban.
The decision to overturn this law was decided on October 24th although it still needs to be pushed through parliament.
“The biggest thing that will change in this law is that you can now dance at night,” says Kenji Kosaka. “Visitors from overseas would come here to Japan and they'd wonder why they can't dance, even though you can dance at night anywhere overseas.”
