At first you would think this doesnt directly affect the EDM Culture, you are wrong. Very recently, BBC’s legal department released a brief but direct press release [which you can read in full below] that stated that they will no longer allow any artists, DJs, to use any music created by Classic Rock bands Neil Young, The Doors, Journey or Bonnie Raitt. Not only are you not allowed to use any original music made by these bands but you're also not allowed to use any cover versions of their songs, or tracks sampling them. Why you ask? The four bands have recently withdrawn from the Mechanical Copyright Protection Society (MCPS), which means no artist is allowed to play any form of their music without breaching copyright. I personally don't think this is a HUGE deal, but it definitely screw up some already-created mixes that are ready to go live. Curious as to what happens if/when someone does break copyright and uses a song that samples one of the four listed bands.. Only time will tell. Check out the quote from their press release below:
You can NOT use tracks by these composers on the radio and/or online.
You can NOT use tracks by these composers whether they are originals or covers.
You can NOT use the lyrics.
You can NOT put performances using these compositions on line.
You can NOT use tracks which include samples of these compositions e.g. Tracks by Skrillex/Chase & Status
You can NOT use clips which include any compositions by these composers”
