If you've used a streaming service and listened to electronic music in the past year or so (which is basically everyone who doesn't live in a jungle), it would be nearly impossible to avoid the name Mark Johns – regardless of your preference in music. The singer has been on fire the past year or so… going from unsigned mediocrity to having a song with The Glitch Mob played during the NBA Finals – to being signed to Skrillex's OWSLA label this week.
She recently opened up to Billboard (read the interview here) and talked about her life like never before – revealing how close Skrillex has helped her transition into a setup in LA where's she's constantly inspired and working with great artists.
Her real name is Naomie and she's actually lived most her life in Asia. We've become familiar with her incredible voice in plenty of new tracks over the past year, but her growing notoriety helps give us more of a picture of her rockstar image that she has only self-depicted with her love of watermelons in the past. Otherwise, she's still a bit of a mystery.
“They’re a super family oriented label which was comforting for me,” she said of the OWSLA community. “My family lives in Asia, and I don’t get to see them much. The idea of moving to LA alone was scary, but after meeting the team and getting to know them over those couple of weeks, I had made up my mind. I definitely wanted OWSLA to be my new home.”
She adds, “I’m just happy that I finally have a sense of direction,” she says. “It came at a time when I think I needed it most. I used to be super anxious all the time, worrying ‘what am I doing with my life?’ But that feeling is gone… it’s been replaced with this feeling of peace that I’ve been waiting for all along.”
Mark Johns had some major releases last year on various outlets like Moving Castle, Next Wave Records, and her single with the Glitch Mob.
