The Gorillaz are back in session, prepare your demon handbooks.
Bridging gaps between electronic, rock, hip-hop, and even reggae, this group is one of the most highly acclaimed acts in the world. Co-creator and cartoon artist Jamie Hewlett (who is getting ready for an art exhibition in London next month) recently spoke with the magazine DIY about their progress into the studio. Damon Albarn, his fellow creator and other half of the duo, suggested the group is dialed in. Back in July, he confessed that the English duo was set to begin recording in September (last month). That has come to fruition.
“I’m working on it at the moment, and it’s going very well,” Jamie said. “I’m very excited. I don’t want to say too much about it, but I’m at that phase of experimentation. What I try not to do when I’m working in this creative period, the cooking of the mess, is go to other peoples’ exhibitions and look at other peoples’ work. I close my eyes, and don’t want to know what anyone else is doing. Doing that has kind of ruined the creative process for me in the past, and I don’t want to let that happen again.”
This will be the fifth studio album by the Gorillaz, their first since 2010's “Plastic Beach.” You can read the full story from DIY here. We're expecting a 2016 release on the new album, which does not have a title yet.
