The director of Ibiza's Department of Tourism, Vincente Torres, recently explained that the island has a “limited capacity” and can't sustain the constant growth in tourism.
Speaking with Pulse, Vicente Torres, said that with the island being only 572 km², it simply can't continue to support the infrastructures such as “roads, treatment and desalination plants” caused from the constant tourism.
Despite an influx of money from tourism, Ibiza experienced a mass over-consumption of drinkable water last year which was brought on mainly from the party tourism environment. In order to sustain Ibiza's natural resources, Ibiza implemented a “sustainable tourism” tax as well as new changes to deter long-term effects on the island itself.
If you're heading out to Ibiza this next year, make sure to account for an extra $0.50 per night in hostels or €2 extra at luxury hotels.
