During a recent interview by Spotify founder Daniel Ek, certain comments have raised questions about Spotify looking to purchase SoundCloud.
“Today Spotify has two million artists on its platform. To us, the next 10 years is all about enabling these artists to make a living out of their music, and connect them with a new audience,” said Daniel Ek to Swedish TV4 about Spotify's 10-year plan. “Today our users say “introduce me to new music”. What the artists say is “help me finding my audience”. Essentially, that’s two sides of the same coin.”
Although nothing is concrete, DiDigital points out that much of the dialogue that Spotify wants to create between the artist and the fan isn't available on Spotify. It is however available on SoundCloud. They wrote “the simple comment function and the Twitter-like flow of music crosses the social network with a music platform in a much more effective way than Spotify‘s partnership with Facebook.”
Only time will tell at this point whether Spotify places a bid on SoundCloud.
