Thanks to Diplo, television is about to become just a little more lit, fam.
Viceland just broke the news that it ordered six pilot episodes of its first-ever scripted television series – What Would Diplo Do?
The show is set to star James Van Der Beek as an exaggerated, fictional version of the infamous Diplo.
The show will be a parody of Diplo’s eccentric lifestyle, and was inspired by last year’s Mad Decent Block Party promo, A Day in the Life (watch below).
As well as serving as the staring role, Van Der Beek will write and executive produce the series. Right by his side in production will be the Grammy-winning man himself, Diplo, Kevin Katsu, and Music Video mogul Brandon Dermer.
The series will be “collection of parables” from the life of a man who can “bring 60,000 people to their feet…but kind of sucks one-on-one,” and can be compared to series like Louie and This is Spinal Tap.
“The show doesn’t take itself too serious, but it’s not cynical,” Van Der Beek said.
Both Diplo and Van Der Beek are notorious for their self-deprecating humor, and the show is certain highlight just that.
“I’ve enjoyed deconstructing my own image quite a bit over the years, but to have the chance to do it with a global megastar like Diplo who’s letting us to do something fun and ridiculous that few people have the balls to allow is crazy,”
The show will be overseen by Viceland co-president Spike Jonze, who said he is excited to see what comes of the show.
“When James was in the office a few weeks ago, he told me the storylines he had sketched out, they were, of course, funny; one even got me emotional, which made it that much more funny,” Jonze said. This idea has gotten inside James which makes me really excited to see what he makes and happy to have it on our channel.”
Production is set to begin in February with a premiere later in 2017.
