Easily one of my favorite artists I've had the pleasure of covering the past couple years has been Seattle born, LA resident, chilltronica producer, Andrew Coulter, or better known as Soul Catalyst. From his early singles leading up to his self titled debut album (released for free last year), Soul Catalyst hasn't just created a host of fantastic beats but has also manufactured a very laid back vibe with a universal appeal that is quite uncommon in dance music. It's like tropical, sunset house that isn't afraid to dim the lights and get a bit dark, while avoiding being labeled a Kygo rip off by minimizing the use of cheesy calypso sounds that characterize the genres more commercial, happy-go-lucky, acts. His latest track “Cosmic Current”, shares the credit with Santa Barbara based producer Ryan Peitzke, or simply Peitzke, who is absolutely no slouch himself. Peitzke's track selection runs very parallel to Andrew's style, only with a more housey, psychedelic feel. The lyrics really stick out in the tune, with lines like “I was a mountain, I let your clouds roll through my hair; You were a river, you kept my stones from tumbling scared” that are so refreshing compared to the typical, melodramatic, EDM dribble. It's not often you find tracks that'll suit a multi-day camping festival and your local alt rock station, but it's even less often you find artists that consistently improve upon their previous work with each release. Soul Catalyst and Peitzke are shining brighter than ever and their music is the optimal choice for welcoming back the warm weather after a very cold and rainy winter.
