Throughout his career, Mat Zo has consistently been one of the most emotionally open and sometimes controversial figures in dance music. Creating music from all genres, never backing down from the hard truths of dance music and his own life, and garnering an dedicated international fan base, it is clear how much Zo has put into his music and his overall career.
Through a series of tweets a few days ago, Zo opened up about the dark nature of his own struggles with mental illness throughout his career. Citing specifically his years of making trance and being a major member of the Anjunabeats label, Zo revealed that some of his most euphoric and melodically positive songs from a place of severe torture. He explained that now being in a better place in his life, he is able to look back on that time and draw conclusions about the genre of trance as a whole. “Trance attracts emotionally damaged people because it has a euphoric healing quality like a stimulant.”
Zo did not deny the fact that at some point in his career, he could make lots of trance again, or that he dislikes the genre. What he did say was, “If I start making it again hardcore, you probably should start worrying about my emotional state”.
