Matt Lange, one of deadmau5’s hand-selected additions to mau5trap, his house-heavy music label, has just released a brand new EP, Escapist and it’s just as much dark and melodic and it is listen-worthy. The L.A.-based producer has been making music since he was just a child and garnered break out attention with his debut full-length electronic album, Ephemera back in 2016. So when we caught wind of Escapist, we were certainly excited to see where he landed this time.
The three-track EP consists of “Escapist,” “Book Biter,” and “Count It.” Overall, the compilation really shows the versatility and skill that Lange is known to possess. After listening (if you didn’t understand why already), you can see why he would be a favorite of deadmau5, himself.
The title track is masterfully consistent with a melody that takes you all the way through the seven-minute track, with peaks and valleys along the way. “Book Biter” is particularly groove-able. This was the one I found myself bobbing along to without even realizing it. “Count It,” my personal favorite, really shows off his production abilities with bouncy synth lines accompanied by dark sounds that are somewhat mysterious and get you all way through the nine-minute track without even realizing it.
