Earlier this weekend, it was discovered by the New York Times that Uber was buying data from the email unsubscribe service, Unroll.me. Apparently, Unroll.me had been selling user data to Uber to help the company gain insight on when customers were switching to its competitor, Lyft.
According to the LA Weekly, Uber was charging riders $250 in order to get home during the music festival this past weekend.
One rider, Elene Perry, walked more than one mile to the Uber meeting site, they used their phones to secure a driver. One Coachella rider said “There were so many people just crushed up against the fence, and these poor Uber staffers were like, ‘Everyone just needs to back up until you have a car.’ We just pushed our way to the front and showed them my phone like, ‘We have one! We have one!”
Perry's group finally got an Uber ride but was shocked to see a charge of $250 on her account. On Friday evening of Weekend 2, riders were forced to pay a minimum of $175 for a ride home from Coachella.
