At the core of Electric Forest's philosophy as a festival lies a respect for the forest which hosts the festival every year. The Sherwood Forest which lies on the western coast of the eastern half of Michigan has grown it's roots deep into the earth for hundreds of years. It is important to remember that in the forest's eyes, the music festival has been taking place for the blink of an eye. Electric Forest is just humble a guest in the home of the natural environment. As many festivals now are starting to look at eco-initiatives, Electric Forest has been focusing on paying respect to their environment for years.
Community Involvement
One of the corner stones of the Electricology program is the community at Electric Forest. Each year thousands travel from all over the world to attend Electric Forest over two weekends in the summer months. This community which is separated by distance throughout the year comes together to celebrate music, art, life and ultimately the environment. Electric Forest saw that it's community was as passionate about keeping the grounds clean as it was as an organization and something incredible was born.
The Electricology Prize Cart: Traveling Rewards Center
The Electricology Prize Cart is one of the most dynamic ways we have seen a festival get it's community involved in an eco-initiative. What are these Prize Carts you ask? Well we are here to provide answers. The Prize Carts are, “roaming Electricology Stores, inspiring mass litter pickups and giving away instant sponsor prizes for trash all over the festival.” The Electricology Prize Carts drive around the festival grounds and encourage fans to pick up trash, in exchange for collected litter turned in at the carts, fans can immediately receive prizes. Prizes include, “Posters, T-Shirts, Sponsored Electric Forest Merchandise and EcoPoints for a chance to win Tickets for Life.” Yeah for picking up trash you could end up winning Forest tickets FOR LIFE.
The Prize carts roll up after the conclusions of sets. You just have to wait until you hear it's signature theme song (written by non other than Kyle Hollingsworth of The String Cheese Incident) and then the contest begins. 3 to 8 minute contests of trash collections are held, and whoever collects the most wins prizes! Does the Prize Cart sound a little too intense for you? Well Electricology has a way for you to compete as well. All you need to do is “bring your trash & recycling to our EcoZones and use our 3-Bin Waste Stations to earn EcoPoints that could win you official festival merchandise and Tickets for Life.”
We will be riding around on the prize carts during the festival and partnering with Electricology throughout Weekend 1. We want to show our readers just how incredible this initiative is, as well as inspire others to continue to take care of our environment. Look out on our socials for before and after pictures of stages as well as behind the scenes info on how the initiative is run. If you want more proof of how amazing this program is, just look at how epic the clean up was last year after Bassnectar‘s set!
