Lyrical masterpieces over electronic infused bass lines are something we can all get behind. With the current state of hip-hip throwing us into this unavoidable world of “mumble rap” it has grown hard to find lyrical workings worth talking about.
Over the weekend, Detroit based artist Darnell Williams, dropped a heater of a single with the help of Elohim. Bringing his electronic touch to this piece, Elohim helped steer Darnell’s lyrics to a powerful and meaningful conclusion. The pairing meshes seamlessly in this experimental collaboration indulging fans into the production and lyrics painting the picture that “Life is like a porno”.
When seeing the song title, you can’t help but anticipate a Borgore type production and lyrical pairing. Completely wrong in my assumptions. This record proves to be a brutally transparent account of Darnell’s frantic yet street savvy instability. When listening, you can’t help but take a step back and wonder what on earth is going through the MC’s mind while at the same time thinking “wow, this is pretty powerful shit”. The MC along with vocals and production by Elohim throws us into world of complex storylines bringing up tough thoughts of mental health, self-destruction, religion, politics and more.
At the end of the day, this is what we look for in music. Smooth production and lyrics that are outside the realm of the modern day takeover of “mumble rap”. Darnell’s ecstatic energy coupled with Elohim’s synth erraticism makes “Porno” and epic track with massive replay value. With a heavy hip-hop inspiration, this track is sure to grasp the eardrums of the masses.
Listen to this track with an open mind and be ready to draw some imagination. It’s like a movie!
