There are some things that simply go well together, macaroni and cheese, peanut butter and jelly, Au5 and Crystal Skies. If for some strange reason you feel the need to argue my logic, allow me to present Cataclysm; the latest fire collaboration between Au5 and the boys in Crystal Skies. This is one of those perfect storm collaborations where both production styles compliment each other, I am certain that if you looked up previous write-ups that I have done on both Au5 and Crystal Skies you will see one common theme, sound design. Both Au5 and Crystal Skies always bring their A game to the sound production and this is a perfect example of it.
Cataclysm begins with light etheric notes that are interrupted by a booming explosion, followed by a throaty synth rattling like a plastic tube being dragged on concrete. The beautiful melody reels you in as the pace increases. True to both Au5 and Crystal Skies the drop is massive! Bass filled growls pull you in every direction, thunderous drums try and smash all the beauty from the song, all while a guitar cries out in the background. There is a fluid motion to Cataclysm, you can feel the song almost pouring into its container and splashing up the sides collapsing onto itself. At the halfway point of the song, it breaks into a wonderful piano melody. Bass fills the empty spaces as the song grows toward the final expansive drop. The sound creation of this song is just what I expected coming from these talented guys; insanity. Take the next five minutes and lose yourself in this one.
