At only 24-years old, Brooklyn-based artist and Slow Roast Records label manager Matsu boasts an array of competitive DJ titles including Red Bull 3Style US Vice Champion, Goldie Awards World Finalist, and Campus DJ US Champion (when he was merely 21-years-old).
Now, Matsu has translated his shrewd mixing prowess into his production project. The bubbling beatmaker has unveiled his “R U With Me” single to earmark his forthcoming debut EP of the same name, releasing on September 24 via the label he runs alongside DJ Craze Slow Roast Records.
“R U With Me” arrives as the first original track by the half Japanese, half Russian producer under the production name Matsu — with his former 2020 “Eerie” single having been a collaboration with multi-instrumentalist black a.m. Running alongside his heroes and mentors, the acclaimed disc jockey considers the single to be his first official release to take foot in his home at Slow Roast Records, where he has also earned the role of Label Manager.
Produced from his home studio in Brooklyn, “R U With Me” is a symbol of Matsu’s diligent efforts throughout the pandemic to hone his craft and evolving sound as a producer. Infused with classic M1 piano synths and 909 drums, “R U With Me” uses vocal chops and modern engineering to instill that classic house sound built for the dancefloor.
“I was heavily inspired by Disclosure’s regular twitch streams early on during quarantine. I would spend hours watching and studying their sessions, and would sit down to apply those new things I learned daily. Eventually, I stopped watching the streams as often and focused entirely on just writing and crafting my own sound.” — Matsu
