Known to the world as Pursound, Chris Varvaro is a talented up and coming producer from the United States. We've ran a few articles on his music releases in the past, and decided it was time to ask him some questions about his music and goals as an artist.
When did you start producing and why?
“I started producing when I was a Freshman in High school in 2013. I started because I was very lucky to find my passion at a young age and it was a great outlet for me in addition to being a drummer. I started listening to EDM and mashups when I was in Middle school while my older brother would drive me to drum lessons. I was captivated by the sounds I would hear because they were so foreign to me being a classically trained musician. I never really thought anything like I had heard was possible to even exist, so that drew me in immediately. From there I fell in love with mashups by Kap Slap, 3lau, and started listening to original music by SHM. The rest was history!”
How did you learn to produce music?
“I learned through countless YouTube tutorials and networking with other artists. I learned the hard way that there is a lot of junk out there and anyone can make a YouTube tutorial. For a while, I was using a lot of incorrect techniques and it showed in my music. What I made sounded flat, lifeless, and just amateurish. From there as I progressed, I met my mentor, who to this day, is amazing at giving me feedback and pushing me as an artist. At first working with him was tough because I was given a lot of objective feedback on my productions. I definitely grew a lot from his coaching as a person and a producer, and I am extremely thankful for all he has done for me!”
What challenges have you faced as a producer and how did you overcome them?
“Staying on top of my game and keeping each release interesting. I feel like it is so easy to get lost in the noise given how saturated the market already is with producers and DJs. For me I try to stay true to my roots and inspiration as an artist while listening to new music and asking myself how I can keep writing in my style and stand out from everyone else.”
What artists influence your music?
“That is such a hard question. I honestly have so much respect for so many artists, but currently I would say my main influences are Illenium, Seven Lions, and great friend of mine Tom Rogers. I just always find myself feeling so refreshed after listening to their work and it truly inspires me.”
Most memorable experience as an artist?
“Probably going to Miami Music Week 2017 last year with the Parazhit Radio family. That was such a crazy experience not only getting to network with some of the industry's best, but being recognized at venues and being told how special my music is to people. That really struck me and assured that what I do is meaningful and can make a huge impact in people's lives. As a young artist I don't think it gets much better than that!”
What are your goals as an artist for 2018?
“I'm really trying to get my music onto bigger platforms such as Sirius XM, bigger/ main EDM YouTube Channels, and get a feature in ThisSongSlaps & other major publications.”
