When you look up the history of electronic dance music, it dates back to the 1960s and evolved over time, picking up the pace in the 90's. EDM has definitely changed over the years, especially since the 2000's and 2010's. Gabriel & Dresden are a DJ duo who have been on the scene since 2001. I had the opportunity to interview them during Imagine Music Festival this year and this is what they had to say:
“There are so many sub-genres now. It used to be house, trance, techno…it used to be called dance music. I think what changed dance music was the need and draw to sell more drinks and fill more clubs,” said Gabriel & Dresden.
Even though the EDM scene is ever-changing, Gabriel & Dresden don't feel the need to change their sound to keep up. Throughout the years, they've kept the integrity of their sound and have loyal fans who are there for them.
“We may not have the hardest hitting music, but we're about emotion. Our goal is to give people a sad, hopeful feeling,” they say. “We want people to be moved, we want to take them somewhere.”
With a wide range of fans and a variety of stages, one show has stood out to the duo. This year, they played at Burning Man for the first time and it said it was a big goal they've been wanting to accomplish.
“Burning Man was something we had been wanting to do for years. It takes a lot of time and investment, but it's something we've always wanted to do.”
Currently, Gabriel & Dresden are working on a Kickstarter to raise money for a new album. The album will consist of collaborations, and vocal and instrumental tracks. Read more and donate here!
