The World Electronic Music Festival, originally known as “The World's Trance Festival,” has been cancelled. The festival, which first saw its beginnings in Ontario, Canada, in 1995, was a pioneer in the electronic music festival realm, and featured artists like Paul Oakenfold and BK in 2000. Although their website states that the festival is on hiatus, clicking for more info reveals that “the economics no longer make sense,” which may refer to the increasing costs to secure DJs to perform at the festival, as well as competing festivals that occur geographically close to and just months within WEMF. Tickets purchased for the 2013 WEMF, which was set for August 16-18, will be refunded. For those who have been a part of WEMF, the festival will be missed but will not be forgotten.
