What’s It like for a DJ to Play at Warped Tour?

Van's Warped Tour has become the alternative rock scene's go-to for summer music. As dance music culture has grown, so has the blending between fan bases. Over the last few years, Warped Tour has incorporated popular electronic music into their lineups. Earlier this month. EDM Sauce got to talk to Crizzly who just finished playing multiple shows with the Van's Warped Tour.

“They are way open to all types of music. Warped tour has branded itself as a rock festival but there are side stages. They have something different.” -Crizzly

Infusing different genres of music together on one platform is a challenge for any production crew. In our interview, Crizzly mentions the strategic placement and setup of side stages that are impeccable to the success of mixed-genre music events. By allowing fans time to explore a festival world, traveling from place to place hearing different sounds, production companies can simultaneously let fans hear the music that they love, and expose them to new types of music.

“Everyone was open to the sound. They got it. I loved playing for the crowd. The crowd has a lot of energy. Everyone is there for the music.” -Crizzly

Genre diversity is difficult to manage for promoters, but it can be even more difficult for fans to accept and adapt to. For a DJ, playing at a rock festival, can be a difficult crowd to crack. Performing live serves two purposes; unleashing a producer's arsenal of music and playing to the crowd's tastes. Being a tastemaker has to go beyond a DJ's own personal preferences. This adds an extra dynamic to condensing what is normally a 90-minute night club set into a 40-minute outdoor performance at a rock show.

Artists like Crizzly are only the first of a generation. People want to see genre lines blurred. People want to see artists trying new things on stage. Festivals around the world who tactfully blend different types of music are going to continue to see an increase in popularity and success.

If you want to get the latest information on Crizzly's music, check him out on facebook and soundcloud. We can expect a plethora of new music coming from Crizzly who is building a studio in Austin, TX and plans to work on new production for the next 6 months.
