Beginning just a few years ago in 2010, Summersalt has quickly grown to become a well-respected EDM event in the beautiful city of San Francisco. From the very start, SF-based event and production company EyeHeartSF has secured some of the top artists in the game for their mini one-day festivals: ZION-I and K.Flay in 2010, Diplo, Zedd, and Dillon Francis in 2012, and Felix Cartal and Kill Paris last year in 2013. (Interesting fact: Last year, Summersalt was actually completely crowdfunded. Wahoo! The power and love of music!).
Jumping around to different locations in the city every year, this year’s Summersalt will be taking place on the water in SF’s historic Pier 70.
And, the planning committee did not disappoint. This year’s lineup is one of the best, and boasts artists such as Big Gigantic, Keys ‘N Krates (one of my personal favorites), the Gaslamp Killer, and more.
And because I know your eyes directly shoot to the top of lineup, I’m going to point out some of the guys at the bottom. I’m a big fan of supporting up and coming artists, especially local. Below are some of my suggestions, and hopefully they inspire you to head to the event a little earlier in the day.
The Schmidt –
San Fracisco-native David Kleinschmidt, aka The Schmidt, is an Electro/House/Nu-Disco producer represented via Beacon Records. Playing in clubs and festivals around the Bay Area (including Northern Lights Music Festival), The Schmidt got his start remixing hits like Eminem’s “Monster” and Tritonal’s “Now or Never,” and has been releasing some impressive Deep House originals, including 5-day old “Whatcha Gon Do with It.”
Manics –
Together, SF pals Chris Sanders, Jordan Deherrera, and Josh Hill Make Up electronic dance group Manics. Focused on releasing independent dance music that is different from your everyday EDM track, the trio created their own label, POPGANG.
DJ Dials –
Noah Bennet Dials – stage name DJ Dials – is a regular around the clubs and hot spots of San Francisco. Often opening for major artists as they roll through the Bay Area (I saw him play a month or so ago with Hudson Mohawke), DJ Dials sets’ range from Hip-Hop to Drum and Bass to slow and sexy R&B. and always get the party started.
Amp Live –
We’re going across the Bay with this one, to the distant land of Oakland. As one half of duo ZION-I, Amp Live aims at bringing together the worlds of EDM and Hip-Hop. Self-proclaimed “innovator, experimenter, and trendsetter,” over the years Amp Live has partnered with and produced for several major and independent artists such as Big Gigantic and Pussycat Dolls, and remixed for top bands like Radiohead and Linkin Park. And since both he and Big Gigantic will be at Summersalt together…I’m hoping for a little cameo performance.
