The legendary nightclub, founded in 1999, has pulsated the hills and valleys associated with the electronic music scene for almost 2 decades. Recently, recommendation made by local police almost forced the club to shut its doors forever. On Thursday night a community council meeting decided that Fabric would remain open, but it would undergo a serious security overhaul. New standard operating procedures at Fabric will remind many of airport security; ID scanning, drug-sniffing dogs. These will be nightly standards that the club estimates will cost close to $4,000 per night to implement.
For those unfamiliar with European ID scanning, authorities and vendors are actually able to tag a person as “banned” which would register if the ID were to be scanned at another location. The recent modifications to policy were called for after the death of an 18-year-old clubber in September. During the council meeting, one regular Fabric attendee claimed that he had only been offered drugs “once in 200 times” and that the new ID scanning policy would be “a gross violation of privacy”. Club ownership emphasizes the importance of safety and publicly discloses that after 15 years and 6,000,000 attendees there have been 4 drug related deaths.
