Friday night in New York City was a snowy one, as people from near and far gathered together at Webster Hall. The small venue was packed with fans waiting for an intimate show from renown DJ duo, Knife Party. This was my fourth time seeing Knife Party, however, it was my first time experiencing their show in a club-like atmosphere. I was expecting the duo to take advantage of the scene by experimenting with their set, pushing the envelope with unpredictable transitions and having a diverse selection of songs. However, I was mildly disappointed with Knife Party‘s set.
Pierce Fulton opened up for Knife Party, dropping many of his progressive house hits. He managed to rally the crowd with a very fitting selection of songs. At a place like Webster Hall, it's vital for DJ's to pay close attention to how the crowd is reacting to the songs. Pierce Fulton connected flawlessly with the crowd that night, something that Knife Party failed to do.
Don't get me wrong, Knife Party is amazing live, especially at festivals. I think some DJs are just more comfortable with bigger crowds. From my own personal experience, Knife Party seems to connect better with the energy of a large audience rather than with a very intimate one.
Some highlights from the night were when Knife Party dropped tracks from their latest album, ‘Abandon Ship', including the hits, ‘Begin Again' and ‘Resistance'.
Every DJ has his or her strengths and weaknesses. At the end of the night I was a little disappointed with Knife Party's set, however, I still fully enjoyed seeing the duo preform at Webster Hall.
