Giorgio Moroder recently invited a select group of journalists to visit with him over breakfast and discuss his upcoming year. His creative insights and revelations are a refreshing delight. We learned that Moroder has dumped his vintage equipment for Pro Tools and that 2015 will involve plenty of collaborations with young and rising talents.
“The fact that I can get involved with young artists is just great,” Moroder said.
Now 74 years old, he beamed about working on a new studio album (the working title is '74 Is The New 24′) that will include singers like Foxes and Charlie XCX. He recently released a music video for his new song “Right Here, Right Now” with Kylie Minogue (2 new songs below). Along with this album, he is working on a movie soundtrack and the video game score to the new Tron video game – alongside 27 year-old Sonny Moore (Skrillex).
He explained, “I'm going to meet Skrillex next week when I'm back. I'm doing the music for a game for Disney‘s ‘Tron'. We have about five themes, electronic stuff and let's see if he's interested in remixing or re-working one of the songs.”
In addition to the News about working with Skrillex, he talked about recording instrumentals in the past versus now.
“The thing right now is that the sounds you get in the computers are so good and so many that it's almost impossible to find something which is new. So I think if there's anything new it has to be musical. ‘I Feel Love‘ was a sound, while in this case I don't think you can create new sounds because there are so many. The music has to be new.”
Overall, his take on the current scene seems to have revitalized his mojo.
“I went to Japan and there was a big show and it was all young people and all Japanese. They knew the lyrics to all the songs and they were all in their 20s. So I still sometime wonder how is it possible? It's great. I must say, I probably the widest difference in age of the audience because I have the older ones who grew up with disco and I have the young ones who were not born but, I guess, still enjoy it now.”
