Back in 2010, Dutch house duo Lucas & Steve (also known as Lucas de Wert and Steven Jansen) are quickly moving up the totem pole of the dance music industry. They're building a name for themselves with solid production including two notable remixes of Red Carpet’s hit “Alright” and Ruffneck’s dance classic “Everybody Be Somebody.” Their original material is also helping them onto the fast track with the single “Blinded” in December 2014 and with a bigger tune that put them on the map with their remix of the dance classic ‘Do It 2 Nite’. “The support for the track was amazing. Frankly speaking, after the success of our remix on Ruffneck’s ‘Everybody Be Somebody’ last summer, we did not expect to be hitting the charts that hard again within such a short time. So yes, that felt great. We experienced it to be very inspiring for our workflow.” The boys have a long and incredible journey ahead of them. EDM Sauce had the pleasure to snag an exclusive interview to see what the duo is doing with their career and learn some other fun facts about them. Now, get ready to discover more about Lucas & Steve!
You guys started in 2010 when dubstep was extremely popular; back then did you ever think that Lucas & Steve would be huge in America like it is now with your ‘deep house’ genre?
“Yes and no. There have been huge trend-differences between Europe and the US in the past. You never know what genre will be hottest next and where, but we are convinced that as long as it concerns good music, there is always a good chance of it being a success anywhere in the world at some point.”
What/Who inspired you to revise the classical song by SOS BAND – Take Your Time (Do It Right)? (‘Do It 2 Nite’ was one of the biggest songs of their music career, a track that is over 30 years old, 1980)
“Steve grew up with his parents listening to the S.O.S. Band. Rockefeller sampling the track in 2008, made this tune one of Lucas’ all-time favorites. It was a track that had been on our remix-wishlist for a long time, so we were happily surprised that we were given the opportunity to do an official remix.”
“Blinded shows the blend between deep house and house that we love and we try to represent with our music. It was our first release on Spinnin’ Records which was very exciting. The success affected us in the usual way: MAKE MORE MUSIC!”
What was your favorite part of remixing Showtek – 90s By Nature feat. MC Ambush?
“That’s an easy one! The 90s organ chords in the break are just epic, really representing that 90s-house-feel. We had a great time building the remix around those.”
What can we look forward to this summer?
“Well, we recently released our newest single Fearless, which is doing great. And of course summer is about to go crazy for us. In several weeks we will be playing at the biggest festivals like Creamfields (UK), Sziget (HU), Electrobeach (FR), Airbeat One (GER) and we will be hitting Ibiza for the first time this summer (a.o. Amnesia and Ushuaia). Music-wise, we've just prepared a release schedule filled until September, which you will probably be hearing about pretty soon.”
Any new music or collaborations in the near future?
“Yes, a lot of new music is coming your way. We’re currently in the studio with some artists you are definitely familiar with and we finished a big collab just this week. This is typically a question we don’t like (haha), because we would love to spread the word and tell with whom we collaborated but we cannot reveal anything yet.” Lucas & Steve recently released their collaboration with Matt & Kendo called You and I Know which is #27 on Beatport House Chart. Which is getting massive attention from other producers and fans! The guys bring instant classic dance vibes here, including energetic piano chords, sultry strings and soulful vocal parts.
If Lucas & Steve could live in a video game, what would it be?
“Super Mario! Ride some turtlesDefeat BowserRescue princess. NICE.”
If you live in any music festival which one would it be and why?
Insomniac’s Electric Daisy Carnival — “Party ‘til the sun comes up!”
If you could revise any classical song (it could be a movie theme song, Mozart, song from the roaring 20s, or even a disco song) which one would it be and why that particular song?
“Michael Jackson – Thriller. Of course there have been revisions already, but they don’t capture the groove as it was intended to in our opinion. The result could be something completely different from what you would expect from us.”
