Expected to grace the cover of The Fader in September's issue, Grimes recently did an interview with the magazine to discuss plenty of topics (and you can read the full article here) including her new album. According to responses on her Twitter account, it will be released in the fall but “it'll be a surprise release cuz I want fans to get it b4 press and the tracks should be heard together.”
Grimes is still a bit of an enigma to many. She came onto the scene when bedroom producers started changing the scope of the music industry with the electronic rise of 2012 or so, making her a unique cross-blend between internet-success and acclaimed singer/songwriter. After just wrapping up a tour with Lana Del Rey, it's apparent she's not just an “EDM” act. However, she stands up for her ability as a producer in the interview.
She confessed to The Fader,
“”The thing that I hate about the Music Industry is all of a sudden it’s like, ‘Grimes is a female musician’ and ‘Grimes has a girly voice.’ It’s like, yeah, but I’m a producer and I spend all day looking at fucking graphs and EQs and doing really technical work.”
After three years, her new album still has no title. It's her first album since “Visions” in 2012 (which helped land her a deal with Jay Z's ROC NATION one year later) and the completed project is expected to drop on 4 AD in October. None of her music you've heard this year will be on it. Two great tracks that received critical acclaim, “Go” and “Realiti,” didn't make the cut.
Intriguing for fans of her work, Grimes also discussed her 12-14 hour studio binge sessions – and “self-engineering” all of the instruments she used including guitar, drums, keys, ukulele, and violin. She talked about locking herself in a room to record “Visions,” but with more time to focus on this piece of work – we should be in for quite a treat.
