On the outside looking in, the famed Island of Ibiza is going through a difficult phase at the moment. Despite still being a popular vacation spot, data proves that residents and tourists alike are concerned and frustrated with the state of the Island and recent figures prove that their pending water crisis has reached an unacceptable point.
Water quantity is an issue but water quality may be an even bigger conundrum at the moment. The lack of fresh water in Ibiza stems from a number of issues including dying crops, sea water permeating through and into the aquifer, and constant loss in distribution from pipe leakage. There are three major desalination plants that need to improve their efficiency as well for things to improve.
Back in August, THUMP reported via Ibiza Today that water reserves fell to 29%, a dangerous note. As that number continues to dive further into a negative direction, the report suggests that “many businesses are now purchasing water trucks and bottled water at considerable extra cost” due to the lack of resources. Thump‘s first-hand account explains how tourists are dealing with major issues like dehydration from lack of water and not being able to take showers.
Pipes are leaking before they can reach households as well. Tourism is making matters worse based on the high demand for copious amounts of clean water. While Ibiza looks to improve efficiency and reduce consumption, club life may be impacted in the coming months if they cannot make some improvements.
