Gentlemen’s Club Share Their Musical Guilty Pleasures

We sought out bass three-piece Gentlemen's Club – who have just released the awesome “Run Up” – and they treated us to five guilty musical pleasures each… check them out!

COFFI

1) Destiny's Child – “Say My Name”

Do I really need to say anything? Surely everyone loves this track… And if you don't, you're lying to yourself.

2) Meshuggah – “Rational Gaze”

I saw Meshuggah at Download Festival in 2009. I've been a fan for so long but this is one of their best songs in my opinion. They played it perfectly live too which was just amazing. I'm an undercover metal fan, I can't lie.

3) Venetian Snares – “Husikam Rave Dojo”

I've had a love for Venetian Snares for years. One of my favorite producers ever. I don't ever really play this kind of music when I'm with people – every time I have, they aren't fans! But, it's my secret love. I love how technical he is as a producer, it really inspires me.

4) Laura Pallas – “Skiing In The Snow”

My dad introduced me to this song. He loves Soul and he brought me up on it. I can't help but sing this song whenever it gets played. I had to include it in this list!

5) Blawan – “Why They Hide Their Bodies Under My Garage?”

I got introduced to this song by a friend from my home city of York and I wasn't a fan at first. When I listened again at home on my monitors, I loved it. The vocal work, the atmosphere, everything. Dark, like my soul (jk jk).

Before I start, this was NOT easy to compile into only 5 songs!

1) Kano ft. Mike Skinner & Leo The Lion – “Nite Nite”

You know those songs that just brighten your day up that little bit more? Yeah, this is one of those.

2) Craig David – “7 Days”

From growing up on a healthy diet of early 2000’s R&B, this one of the many Craig David songs that stuck to me. They don’t make them like this anymore.

3) Ja Rule ft. Ashanti – “Mesmerize”

If this is played and you don’t sing every lyric to the chorus, then we can’t be friends. (Ps. having to choose between this track, “I’m Real”, “What’s Luv” & “Always On Time” was something I wouldn’t put anyone through).

4) Soul For Real – “Candy Rain

As you can probably see by now, I like my R&B. This one is a golden oldie, but guaranteed to have me shaking a leg and bussin’ a bogle!

5) Roy Davis Jnr ft. Peven Everett – “Gabriel” (Live Garage Version)

I saved this one for last, easily one of my top 5 songs of all time! Every element in this song is just perfect, I’d happily have this song the soundtrack to my life.

50 CARROT

1) Ms Dynamite – “Dy-Na-Mi-Tee”

Absolute classic for me. Ms Dynamite killed it. Easily one of my favourite artists from early to mid 2000’s, another big track is “Boo” which absolutely shut down dance floors across the UK! She was really good at pushing underground feeling in her tracks.

2) Busta Rhymes – “Touch It” (Remix)

I remember this being my jam in primary school leaving disco, the remix is just a cluster f*ck of artists that were smashing it at the time. Busta Rhymes is a badman – he is one of the most consistent rappers in the scene for me. He never fails to impress, and always stays on top of his game. I f*cking love “Gimme Some More” too, there's so many! I wish we could have had a Busta Rhymes Top 5.

3) The Prodigy “Spitfire”

After hearing this song on Forza Motorsport 2, I went on a massive hunt to find it! I found it and had a chance to listen to by itself without the sound of cars disrupting the quality and I was blown away. The sound design was impeccable and to say it came out in 2004, it’s a testament to their musical ability. The eastern vocals on the intro with the bass underlying creates a vibe that’s just perfect for a high energy environment! Especially for a rave. This tune has definitely influenced me on some of my tracks.

4) Tennyson “Like What?”

I fell in love with the song after going on a random Soundcloud search and finding it on some artist likes. I am a massive fan of Tennyson and this is a piece of musical genius, it mixes funky hip hop infused with jazz. The song takes you through a story. Big up Tennyson.

5) Bonobo “Recurring”

I found this song after downloading iTunes for the first time and came across the full album (“Days To Come”). This track really stood out for me tho. Bonobo tracks still influence me to this date, they have an organic feel to them and chilled vibe perfect for relaxing to. Sunset vibes.
