The LA County government approved new guidelines for concerts and music festivals earlier this week.
Following a string of deaths related to MDMA consumption, the LA county government will combine a team made up of fire, medical, public health, sheriffs and other top county officials to make the call on whether a music festival with 10,000 or more people will be an 18+ or 21+ event.
Under the new guidelines, music festival promoters will have to submit plans to the team 120 days in advance of the event. The assessment team will then make a “threat assessment” based on the size of the event as well as the possibility of drug use.
“Protecting the health and safety of L.A. County residents and visitors attending mass gatherings at our County Fairgrounds, and parks and recreation spaces is the overarching goal,” said Supervisor Hilda Solis. “With proper planning and coordination,” she said, “we will reduce the risk of loss of life and harm to event attendees.”
