Apple is looking into acquiring the premium music streaming service Tidal. Tidal which was rediscovered back in 2014 when Jay Z acquired it from Aspiro for $56 million has been in competition with Apple Music. In the past year, Tidal has been gaining ground by obtaining exclusives from Beyonce, Kanye West and a number of other artists.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the deal may not ultimately happen, but Apple is indeed exploring the possibility.
The deal with Tidal would be a follow up to Apple's $3 billion acquisition of Beats Electronic back in 2014. If Tidal did in fact become an Apple product though, Wall Street Journal claims that it would “bolster” Apple Music which currently has 15 million subscribers. If the deal did go through, the deal could potentially benefit music streamers as many of our favorite artists are split on different services for music exclusivity.
