Rezz has released her latest EP Something Wrong Here on the Deadmau5 label Mau5trap. This EP is even darker and more hypnotic than I was hoping for. I had the pleasure of sitting down for an interview with Rezz before her Life is Beautiful set in Las Vegas and she was hyped about this release, now I can see why.
With an in your face industrial sound Rezz breaks it down as if she were possessed by Trent Reznor. As with most of the music Rezz creates do yourself a favor, skip the laptop preview and get your good headphones out to fully appreciate how far down the rabbit hole her bass goes.
Purple Gusher starts off Something Wrong Here with synth stabs cutting through a tenebrous melody. With the tempo of a metronome the drums march through this one as the bass drips through the cracks.
Selector revs up like a jet engine into bouncy synths followed by dizzying wubs. This song will spin you like the goggles Rezz adorns on stage.
Melancholy is a collab with Laura Brehm, whose voice I fell in love with after hearing the work she did on Mr. Fijiwiji’s Pure Sunlight. Laura can be quoted from her Facebook page as saying “Probably my darkest tune yet…” True to its name, the doleful acoustic guitar sets up the steadfast drums accompanied by Laura’s remarkable voice, this track is amazing.
Cryptic is a beautiful song that spirals down into a grimy bass line that continues to whirl you in every direction. With an almost classical music melody contrasted by the buzzing bassline, this song is boisterous.
Voice In The Wall may be my favorite track of the EP. With a saturated bassline and shuffling synths, the hypnotic drops come with a driving force. This track is designed to push the limits of subwoofers all over the world.
Paranoid really has that industrial feel that makes me shut my eyes, bow my head, and enter into that slight head bob as if I were intently staring at each foot for 1 second intervals. The song wraps up with some breakbeat drums, for a bar or two, before erupting into the EP’s finale.
