There is a ban on electronic music events in Buenos Aires, but that is not going to stop Kraftwerk from playing their records loud. The ban did push the group's original performance which was scheduled for last week back, but they are going ahead with the event on November 23 at Luna Park Stadium. Argentinian publication La Viola reported yesterday that after a successful appeal in court, the show must go on. The show was 70 percent sold out when the promotors found out the event would be tentatively cancelled.
The ban on electronic events was created early this year by city mayor Horacio Rodriguez Larreta after five people died at Time Warp’s Buenos Aires festival in April.
Why has Kraftwerk been given the go-ahead despite a ban on events of the electronic genre? Their use of synthesizers or samplers as their primary instrument will allow them to be the exception, per government officials.
Kraftwerk hails from West Germany and was formed in 1970 by Ralf Hütter and Florian Schneider. The group, which is now comprised of the original two plus Henning Schmitz and Falk Grieffenhagen has seen many members come and go through the years and are known as “innovators and pioneers” of electronic music. Their work was presented a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Grammy Academy in 2014 and they have recently nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, along with fellow Electronic pioneers Depeche Mode and Chic.
