It was only yesterday that fans of the music phenom Pretty Lights got their first taste of new and original content from their idol. This March, Pretty Lights A.K.A Derek Vincent Smith released a new original track entitled “Only Yesterday” in combination with a Music Video that feature shots of Derek, his band, and the Pretty Lights Family (PLF) enjoying the scenery and the festival Smith held in Telluride, Colorado. Before that track, the last thing that DVS had released had been his coveted album A Color Map of the Sun in 2013. The album was ground breaking for Smith and the entirety of the dance music industry as it was the first electronic dance music album that used all original sounds recorded by Derek and his band over the course of the two year process that resulted in the release of the project. Since March, Smith ventured on a 5 stop, 10 show tour over the summer and fall months that he titled “An Episodic Festival”. Another stop in Telluride, as well as stops in New Hampshire, Chicago, Nashville and Red Rocks left fans begging for more Pretty Lights at the close of the tour.
Now, in a rare interview with the Denver Post, Smith has revealed a lot about the future of the Pretty Lights project, including a new album in 2017. The album is set to be released alongside a film that Smith has produced as well. Smith spoke about the project in the best of spirits explaining that it's main focus was connecting with the fans and people of the PLF. Connecting it to his Episodic tour, he explained that every song off the album has it's own story and is it's own episode. The continuation of this theme has excited fans as the episodic tour was received with stellar reviews from all over the nation. Speaking directly about the film, Smith explained that during every stop of the 2016 tour was the site for massive amounts of film being shot. Each new song Smith premieres will follow in succession with film from a different tour stop.
It's safe to say that this project is one we are absolute giddy to see. Combining lighting production, groundbreaking music processes, films and photos, and many other aspects of the artistic world, Smith has been able to encompass the true nature of what it means to be an artist. His craft is one that we throughly enjoy witnessing, and this next project is our next stop on his magical journey through expression. We are overwhelmed with wonder at what this project will look and sound like, and are eagerly waiting for it's arrival.
