deadmau5 took to the airwaves last night of the legendary BBC Radio 1 for the first installment of his residency. Many other news outlets have claimed that deadmau5 has been the center of some controversy lately for playing a set which Marshmello fans did not enjoy. Obviously this is entirely stupid and no story actually existed. What did exist behind the scenes of all that made up drama was the mau5 diligently preparing to blow us away with his first mix.
The set is based heavy in techno and deeper cuts, that being said some progressive downright euphoric sections are mixed in as well. This is where deadmau5 has always shined since I first saw him in 2008 – his ability to craft a beautiful set which brings the listener to the highest highs and through the darkest dark. This mix is nothing short of musical mastery. Some highlights in my opinion include Lane 8's ‘With Me' dancing into Gardens of God's ‘River' and also Com Truise's remix of ‘Strobe‘ into Jon Hopkins ‘Lost in Thought'.
It was not just a celebration for his first mix of a residency as it was also deadmau5's birthday. He cuts in after the first track to alert the public that he will be playing over the course of his residency – “whatever he feels like” including some favorites like Amon Tobin, Boards of Canada and of course “a lot of techno”. The Mau5trap label head also promised a lot of new music from the label as his residency continues, and plans to bring some friends along to guest mixes.
