It's been five long years since we last heard new music from the distinguished English trio, The xx. The xx is comprised of three members; Romy Madley Croft, Oliver Smith and Jamie Smith aka Jamie xx, who's most well known for his 2015 solo album,”In Colour”. Romy and Oliver share their vocals on most xx tracks and play the guitar and bass respectively. Jamie is the mastermind behind the beats and production of the trio. The xx announced the release of this album back in November by premiering the first featured single; On Hold.
But, the wait is finally over. It's here. The bands third studio album; “I See You”. Released on January 13th, it features 10 beautifully produced and passionately written songs.
This album really showcases the diversity in sound the band has developed since their last studio album; “Coexist”. Songs like Dangerous and On Hold feature up-tempo 808's that make you want to close your eyes and lose yourself on a dance floor. Specifically Dangerous, which features big band sounds, previously unheard of in The xx's discography. Where as songs like Test Me and Replica stay true to The xx's signature slower more electro based vibes.
What I think distinguishes The xx is their emotional, poetic lyrics. The words in their songs seem to pull at feelings that you didn't even realize you had. The male and female vocalists make you nostalgic for a beautiful loneliness and heartbreak.
One particular song that stood out to me was the female solo ballad; Brave for You. Not only did I fall in love instantly with the eerie, almost sitar-sounding guitar riff, but Croft's vocals compliment the instrument fabulously. One of my favorite lyrics from the whole album, you know the one that gives you instant chills, is in this song. Right before the end of the song, Croft croons “There are things i wish i didn't know, i will try my best to let them go”. Her hauntingly beautiful voice paired with the mysterious echoing of that guitar simply created my favorite song off the album.
If you can't get enough of their newest album, you're in luck. The xx is touring their latest album this summer. See if they're coming to a city near you and prepare for a performance of a lifetime.
