Matthew Koma is sort of a big deal in the EDM world. Outside of writing, recording and producing his own slew of successful hits, he’s most notably known for his writing contributions to some of the industry’s biggest songs, i.e. Zedd’s “Spectrum” & Grammy-winning “Clarity,” also with Zedd.
But most recently he’s back with his own original song in collaboration with Jai Wolf, and, damn, is it powerful. His song “Dear Ana” is a very personal memento to his own struggle with an eating disorder.
“’Dear Ana’ is a song about my battle with an eating disorder that nearly killed me. I always had some issues around body image and body dysmorphia but didn’t have the strength to face it or talk about it openly. I became so mentally and physically exhausted and it didn’t get any better in the context of shooting photos and Music Videos, doing promo etc. I finally hit a rock bottom when it was a matter of survival, but admitting it was only the first step of a very long and hard journey. I wrote this song during my first week of recovery. It takes conscious decisions every day to continue overcoming the thoughts, patterns and fears…but with the right support and headspace, I’m grateful to be heading in the right direction,“ Kona explained in a recent statement.
The song itself is a fluid ballad that compliments Koma’s soulful vocals with Wolf’s effervescent synth & soaring melodies. The lyrics of “Dear Ana” paint a powerful picture of what an ongoing struggle that someone with an eating disorder might face. Wolf’s composition of the music is the perfect compliment to such an impactful message.
