Boombox Cartel has been one of the hottest names in trap music this past year. At Miami Music Week this year, we took some time to talk to Americo from the duo. He had a lot to share about the Boombox project, take a look below and enjoy some Cartel secrets!
First off, what do you think of Miami Music Week so far?
It’s incredible. We just arrived and this event is us starting off. I can’t tell if I should sleep or keeping pushing awake, it’s crazy hectic!
You are set to play the Mad Decent Stage takeover at Ultra on Friday. Are you excited?
Yes! We’ll be closing the stage, and that’s a true honor for us. It’s going to be late, there will be a ton of people using their last energy for the day, we’re very excited to keep it going till the end.
Do you have anything special planned for the set?
Well we have a ton of new music to play for the crowd at Ultra. Lot’s of what we are listening to at the moment as well, so you’ll hear all of the close Boombox homies. Every city is different, we can’t wait to see what happens here in Miami.
Tell us a little more about your new tracks “Jefe” and “Alamo”.
We are relieved to have them out. We have been working on them forever and it’s so nice to be able to share them with our fans after all this time. Mad Decent is putting out a new EP as well with those two songs included, and so far we’ve gotten a great response so there’s a lot more for you guys to come.
What is this album going to sound like?
We’re going to start putting out some stuff that will make people question if they are really listening to Boombox or not. Jorge and I actually come from a rock album, and Jorge is a classically trained pianist, so we’ve been expanding on those influences and working with a lot of song writers who are inspiring us in different ways. 2017 will not be about one sound for us, we’ll be hitting every style with every flavor we have.
What’s it been like on tour recently?
Amazing. We’ve been hitting a ton of big cities and the traveling with our team has been a blast. With our lighting designer and merchandise people on the road with us, we’ve been trying to make these shows really special. Every night has been something new music wise, and we are constantly adapting to make sure it’s as fresh as it possible can be fore attendees. We want to be unique and progress. We want to raise the bar every night and keep working hard to be the best Boombox Cartel we can be. Bigger and better is our motto.
Tell us about your creative process.
It starts from everywhere. It could be a voice or a note on an iPhone, or an audio loop we find online, it could be anything. We’ll re-sample it, start to work on chord progression and our drum loops and all of a sudden a natural baseline develops and we’re rolling. There’s no order to it all, no rules is how we like it. If you always start music the same it’ll always sound the same. So we always have to keep changing.
If you were stuck on a deserted island, and you could only listen to one record for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?
Definitely Major Tom. Maybe not, it could be so many things. There are so many records that changed my life. Even Semi-Charmed Life by Third Eye Blind was huge for me. Any Daddy Yankee song from 2003-2004. I can’t Make Up my mind.
