Interview
How did you guys meet and what made you decide to work together?
We met in high school when we were about 14 years old. We used to play in several high school bands together, but it wasn’t until we were about 18 years old before we started working together on writing electronic music. We both liked the same sort of early Electro like Dada Life, Bingo Players, Afrojack, Zedd, Porter Robinson, Madeon, Stijn, Casiokids, and we were having a lot of fun together so we decided to team up.
Who are some of your major musical influences?
Most of our musical influences come from other genres of music, for example bands like The Beatles, Queen, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Daft Punk, Justice. Within current electronic music we like Zedd & Galantis.
Where did the name Bali Bandits come from?
We used to live together in an appartment at the Bali Street in Amsterdam. Our living room was transformed in a studio and we made music all day so we decided to name our act after that. Bandits is pretty much just another word starting with a B haha, could have been Bali Ballerinas, Bali Boombox or Bali Boeing 747.
If you had to pick 3 songs of yours to get a new listener introduced to your sound, what 3 would you pick?
We think they should listen to our remix we did for Zedd, Hailee Steinfeld & Grey’s Starving, our track Oh Baby (Croissant) and KABOOM to get a cool feeling of our style.
Your newest release “Bonzo's Juggling Show” is an extremely unique track. What went into that song, and where did the title come from?
We went to a circus and met with Clown Bonzo afterwards. We told him we are musicians and he told us he was looking for an anthem for his Juggling routine and dared us to make one. So we did. And it kinda sounds like a circus act right?
What artists EDM or otherwise are you listening to right now?
Not so much EDM tough, we think EDM music is cool at festivals and clubs. But not really to listen to at home or on a bike. Acts we do listen to at home are Kendrick Lamar, Cashmere Cat, Mura Masa, Nick Drake, Jamiroquai, Jeff Buckley and a lot of others as well.
What does the summer have in store for The Bali Bandits?
Making and playing music! We’re playing Tomorrowland for the first and second time this year (that’s right, twice!) so we are pretty stoked about that. Also we have a big pile of tracks almost finished which we hope to release during the summer.
