This is one of the biggest deals to come in the era of streaming music. Google purchased Youtube many years back in what would be considered one of the post moves by a company in the digital era and soon after both companies started their own music streaming services. Google went the route of Google Play which copied the success of Apple's iTunes platform. Youtube eventually created Youtube Red which was more or less their roundabout way to have users pay for the one feature they were asking for years to have – the ability to lock their screens on mobile devices with music continuing to play.
Only A Matter of Time
It truly was only a matter of time before this deal would be reached. As noted before, Google is the parent company of Youtube and it only makes sense for the two companies to merge their streaming services. Youtube in particular was plagued with some insanely complicated features for both Youtube Red and Youtube Music. As of now it seems that the apps will not cease to exist and become one, but instead when a user buys a subscription to one the other will be included. In a statement to The Verge Google touched on merger,
“Music is very important to Google and we’re evaluating how to bring together our music offerings to deliver the best possible product for our users, music partners and artists. Nothing will change for users today and we’ll provide plenty of notice before any changes are made.”
